GeneMOb Client Description

GeneMOb is a software framework designed to facilitate integration and sharing of information about genes. It manipulates software constructs called Gene Mobile Objects - tree structures combining information about gene homologs from different organisms, and their corresponding RNAs, proteins, and genomic variants such as SNPs. Gene collections defined by identifiers representing any type of the gene tree node can be created, or imported, in GeneMOb. The software automatically generates gene annotations by integrating information from all the collections in the database. GeneMOb software is written in Java, and is currently available in two configurations: GeneMOb_net is the original distributed application using RMI, Java Web Start, and MySQL database. The new GeneMOb_desk is a stand-alone desktop application using Java DB as a back-end. While the graphical user interface is the same in both forms, the latter requires no server and database administration. A version of the software for mobile devices, such as smart phones, will be offered in the future. All configurations can exchange data by a means of XML files.
