Jackson 1.x Description

Jackson is a program to mix existing music, much like a DJ mixes tracks on vinyl or on CDs. If you have any interest in mixing music, as a professional or in your spare time, Jackson might be the tool for you. Different from programs like Native Instruments' Traktor, Jackson does not emulate the traditional DJ setup composed of two turntables and a mixer. With Jackson we are trying to open up the real potential of computers for DJs and there is no point in emulating old technology. In many ways, Jackson resembles music-making programs like Ableton Live. Still, Jackson is much more DJ oriented than those programs and much more suited to mixing existing tracks. Before you can play a track in Jackson, it has to be analyzed -once- so that the program knows about its musical structure. In the future, this additional information, called meta-data, will most likely be supplied by the producers or distributors of tracks. Whenever you download a song, the meta-data will then be embedded in it. For the moment, however, you need to prepare tracks yourself. Jackson comes with a tool named BeatMapper, that allows you to identify the beats in a tracks and to embed this information in the track. Although powerful, Jackson is still young. There is much more to come, both in terms of functionality and ease of use. We appreciate you as an early adopter and want to take you with us on this trip. A key purchased for any version of Jackson 1.x will work with all future versions of Jackson 1.x. Jackson is becoming an increasingly powerful live remixing tool. The meta-data itself, for example the visual representation of a track, will become increasingly sophisticated. More powerful computers will allow for better time-stretching and other new functionality. Physical control surfaces with real sliders and pads will be better than what's available for CD players these days. Small, portable hard disks and USB key hangers will carry thousands of tracks in compressed or uncompressed format. If needed, tracks can be downloaded before or during a set at the club itself. Because of all these reasons, we are convinced that programs like Jackson will replace CD mixing and most vinyl mixing in the future. Join us now. Platforms supported: Windows XP
