SupRip Description

SupRip is a tiny and portable software application that can detect text within subtitles used by HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies with the help of OCR technology, further allowing you to extract the text and save it to SRT format, so that you can use it the converted movies. No installation requiredSince there is no setup pack involved, you can drop the program files in a custom location on the disk and just click the executable to launch SupRip. There is also the possibility to save it to a pen drive or other removable storage unit to be able to run it on any machine effortlessly. Worth mentioning is that, unlike most installers, it does not affect the Windows registry in any way. Simple interface and advanced settingsThe GUI looks outdated, made of a classical-looking window with a simple structure, where you can open Subpicture (.SUP) and Scenarist Subtitles (.SCN-SST), view images, and tinker with settings before applying the OCR method. These revolve around the the space width, character split and similarity tolerance, along with the contrast, among others. These parameters can be restored to default at any time. In addition, you can consult a character map and insert symbols into the subtitles to modify them. In order to save the new files, all you have to do is point out the output directory and file name. Evaluation and conclusionNo error dialogs popped up in our tests, and the program did not hang or crash. As expected, it leaves a small footprint on system resources, thanks to the fact that it needs low CPU and RAM to work properly. On the other hand, its interface needs a complete makeover. Although it's not dedicated to first-time users, SupRip provides advanced ones with a reliable method to extracting text from SUP and SCN-SST subtitles to save them as SRT, a more user-friendly subtitle format.
