1D Relative Motion Description
1D Relative Motion is a handy, small, easy to use application specially designed to help you experiment with relative motion. There are two objects on a conveyor belt. You can set the velocity of the conveyor belt and the velocity of each object (speed and direction) relative to the conveyor belt. The user can also set the start position of the Red object (to keep it from riding off the belt quickly). After picking all the variables, select to initialize them and then press the play button to see what happens. Have students determine the relative velocity between the red and blue object, as well as the objects' relative velocities with respect to a stationary observer. Students could also use the time and separation data to see if their relative velocity calculations make sense. The answers remain hidden until the See Answers checkbox is selected.
