Historical Vector Maps of Europe Description

The maps used for the Euratlas Historical Atlas of Europe cover the Earth’s surface from the degree 15 west to 50 east, and from degree 20 north to 60 north. They describe the political situation of this area at the first day of each centennial year C.E. The first map is year 1, and the following are increased by 100 up to year 2000. The History maps can be superimposed to the Physical Vector Map of Europe. Main features Each map consists of 9 layers or main planes. The layers surimposing order, fonts and colors may be changed according to User's choice. 1-pays: coloured polygons representing the Countries. Dependent countries are drawn in the same color as the main state but bear a smaller surface with a specific shade. The User has to redraw shadings by himself if needed. 2-rivers: lines representing the main water courses. With the exception of a few Details (Suez Canal, for example), this layer is the same for all maps. 3-oceans: drawing of sea and lake surfaces, i.e., of coasts, in 6 main vector objects. The colour of the lakes or of the North Sea can be changed without touching the Mediterranean. This layer is relatively homogeneous regardless of the century considered, but there are four main forms: 1 - 700, 800 - 1400, and 1500 - 1900. The 2000 layer has additional artificial land and lakes. 4-villes: small circles with names in 1-point Arial font mark the sites of the main cities of each century. The names, in local language, vary, going from Latin to Medieval and modern languages. There are about 1000 names for ancient maps. This number increases progressively to 2550 for the year 2000. As font coding may cause complex issues, an additional layer named "4b-villes vect" includes all names as vectorized fonts. This layer may be suppressed if the main layer displays text properly. 5-provinces: polygonal lines for internal administrative borders of main countries and major administrative divisions like regions or dioceses.
